AUTHOR'S NOTES
The first thing you notice about Reedbeck is its external grandeur. The second is how remarkably comfortable and warm it feels when you are inside. For a home of this stature, these feelings were never accidental.
Within Reedbeck's extraordinary volumes, proportion became less about decoration and more about achieving human comfort. The larger the rooms were, the more important even seemingly minor details became. Even the skirting and cornice profiles became an exercise in establishing the appropriate proportion. As the junction where floors meet walls that soar to almost four metres in height throughout, they became an important architectural element. Their generous scale was questioned at various points of the design process right through to fabrication, yet conventional dimensions would have simply disappeared within rooms of this volume.
Like many details throughout Reedbeck, they weren't primarily designed to attract attention, but to elegantly build upon the multi-layered composition of the home, resulting in spaces that would simply look and feel right. They still remain among my favourite details within this home, not because they are immediately noticeable, but because they reinforced something we repeatedly returned to throughout the project; that this home required a nuanced approach to its scale and proportion.
This example became part of the many hundreds of decisions, both large and small, that aren't necessarily obvious to the eye initially but more importantly are felt in person.
